ELMBRIDGE JUNIOR CITIZEN 2010

Schoolchildren from across Elmbridge learned how to be safe and responsible citizens thanks to the Junior Citizen scheme, which took place at Walton Fire Station in Hersham Road from 7 – 23 June 2010.

The main focus of the scheme is safety, and the event was run by a number of agencies including Surrey Police, Elmbridge Borough Council, Surrey Fire and Rescue, St John Ambulance, Elmbridge Housing Trust, EDF Energy and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Approximately 1,300 Year 6 children (aged between 10 and 11) from 24 primary schools across the borough from took part in a number of different workshops on issues including crime reduction, 999 calls, stranger danger, road safety, fire safety, first aid, water safety and electricity dangers together with sets on how to recycle and the importance of the environment.

This year the Junior Citizen scheme received significant support from Cargill plc, a Cobham based company who sponsored a handbook for the young people to take away and let them work through some of the different situations they may encounter in the future. Designed for them to use either at home or at school to help develop their skills, abilities and attitudes both from a personal and practical view on a wide range of community safety issues.

Jan Winteridge, Communication Manager of Cargill said: “The Junior Citizen scheme is delivered at just the right time when children are about to move onto secondary school and it presents a great opportunity to educate them about safety issues, especially at a time when they really do need to be aware of how to look after themselves. Safety is a key priority for Cargill, so we are very pleased to have been able to contribute to this and support the work of the Community Safety Partnership to help provide safety awareness and practices to young people whose health, wellbeing and safety are vital".

The Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Barry Cheyne, saw the children from St Andrew’s Primary School, Cobham taking part in the various workshops when he visited the scheme on Friday 11 June.
